It was at this crisis that Mr. Webster delivered his celebrated 7th of March speech,in many respects his greatest,in which he advocated conciliation and adherence to the Constitution, but which was represented to support Southern interests, which all his life he had opposed; and more, to advocate these interests, in order to secure Southern votes for the presidency.
