The others grow erect as a mast, but the gentle coconuts lean on the wind and mingle the waving of their sisterly arms, casting a grateful shade on the humble folk who live under their blessing.

What we most enjoyed was the vegetationa feast for our eyes, after the dull arid shores of North-western Australia: and we gazed with intense pleasure on the rich green spreading leaf of the banana and other tropical fruit-trees, above which towered, the graceful coconut.

We fed them at first on ripe coconuts, of which they were very fond; but latterly they became accustomed to pea-soup.

The hospitable coast supplies them with fish, crabs, plenty of mussels, and frequently unprotected coconuts.
