But that which desolates families, and which causes a physical degradation of the human race exposed to the attacks of malaria, is the chronic poisoning, which undermines the springs of life and produces a slow but progressive anæmia.

The negroes have long been held famous in the act of secret or slow poisoning.

Mental poisoning.

The parents, by alcoholic poisoning, have lowered the race stock of vitality beyond the power of ascent or possibility to rise above or overcome the downward tendency.

It was a wholesale poisoning.

The question, then, is to replace quinine, and the alkaloids which possess an analogous physiological action, by an agent the efficacy of which against, chronic malarial poisoning may be greater and the dangers of its employment less.

Occasional poisonings from the kitchen, and open or stealthy assassinations in the field, and local revolts extending to a score or so, will continue to occur as the natural results of slavery; but no general insurrection of slaves, as I think, can happen in this country for a long time.

But the systematic poisoning of alcoholic liquors permitted under a licensing System is the most flagrant example of the evil.

The Carthagenians seem also to have been acquainted with this act of diabolical poisoning; and they are said, on the authority of Aulus Gellius, to have administered some to Regulus, the Roman general.

But although the sentiments of the characters are reported in concealed blank verse that smacks of theatrical rant, though the absurd Oriental digressions, the disguises, the frequent poisonings, and fortunate accidents all detract from the naturalness and plausibility of the tale, yet one cannot deny the piece occasional merits, which if smothered in extravagances, are hopeful signs of a coming change.

Inhaling this, some of the operators die of lead poisoning.

When I have spoken all I can imagine, I cannot utter half that she intends; She makes as little poisoning of a man, As to carouse; I feel that this is true.

All these facts, which can be easily verified if the subject of malaria be studied on the spot and without any preconceived notions, explain the tendency which has always been manifested to attribute this specific poisoning of the air to a living organism which is multiplied in the soil; and they also explain the ardor with which hygienists have applied themselves to the production of the scientific proof.

It is nonsense to suppose that such food is equally wholesome with fresh food, or that there is not considerable risk of acute poisoning or a permanent impairment of the digestive system.

Some persons are unable to eat certain kinds of fish, especially shell-fish, without eruptions on the skin and other symptoms of mild poisoning.

With narcotic poisoning, the symptoms come on more slowly.

At the same time, no one of fair education should neglect to learn a few of the essential things to do in accidental or intentional poisoning.

It has discovered that fatigue is due not only to actual poisoning, but to a specific poison or toxin of fatigue, entirely analogous in chemical and physical nature to other bacterial toxins, such as the diphtheria toxin.

The septic matter has gained the blood-stream, and the patient succumbs to septic poisoning.

So they brought him in with the severe blood-poisoning that sets in in almost all cases of such a nature.

All the circumstances of Mr. James Allerdyke's death, and of Lisette Beaurepaire's death, pointed to unusually skillful poisoning.

But we must not forget that slow morphine poisoning might be eminently suitable in certain cases.

There were about sixty of them, all suffering, more or less, from the effects of arsenic poisoning.

Finally the originator of these rumours piously contradicts them all and announces, "lieb Vaterland magst ruhig sein," in the following words: "Wolff's Bureau reports: There is absolutely no reason for anxiety on account of the alleged poisoning and infection of rivers, water supplies and springs which have been reported unauthoritatively from all parts of the country, and published in the Press.

"It looks to me like an undoubted case of criminal poisoning," I continued.
