Of the earlier theories only two have been able to gather a circle of adherentsthe dualistic theism of Günther (1783-1863), and the organic view of the world of Trendelenburg (1802-72).

The vaster vistas which scientific evolutionism has opened, and the rising tide of social democratic ideals, have changed the type of our imagination, and the older monarchical theism is obsolete or obsolescent.

Whether or not we hold the primitive religion of mankind to have been a pure theism, directly revealed by God,which is my own conviction,it is equally clear that the form of religion recorded in the earliest written records of poetry or legend was a worship of the sun and moon and planets.
