The influence of the mythological drama, again, is not of the first importance, and is also very restricted in its occurrence; the Maid's Metamorphosis is the most striking example.

It seems to me that this physical metamorphosis is no false image of what has been the result of our subjecting it to a jet of fervent, though nowise brilliant, thought to-night.

Mr. Edmund W. Gosse has suggested that the Maydes Metamorphosis may be an early work of John Day; and no one is better able to pronounce on such a point than Mr. Gosse.
