The great gateway of the castle still stands, and in Southover, the suburb of Lewes, are the remains of the once large and wealthy Priory of St. Pancras.

But such cases are of course mere survivals from the time when the suburb was a village.

These suburbs were a mass of ruins, but enough was left intact to show the immense strength of the enemy's position at the former place.

Then the great suburb of St. Roch is a sight to see.
