The great introducer of moral wisdom among the pagans did practise it so much (by it repressing the windy pride and fallacious vanity of sophisters in his time), that he thereby got the name of [Greek], the droll; and the rest of those who pursued his design do, by numberless stories and apophthegms recorded of them, appear well skilled and much delighted in this way.

When he thought there was intentional falsehood in the relator, his expression was, 'He lies, and he knows he lies.' Speaking of Pope's not having been known to excel in conversation, Johnson observes, that 'traditional memory retains no sallies of raillery, or sentences of observation; nothing either pointed or solid, wise or merry; and that one apophthegm only is recorded.'

occurs the following apophthegm, which is the one relating to the subject before us: "That same man, that renneth awaie, May again fight, on other daie.

On literary réclame, he says much that is trueif not the whole truth, in the apophthegm for instance, 'You have to become famous before you can secure the attention which would give fame.'

In Stephen and nephew, ph has the sound of v. The h after p, is silent in diphthong, triphthong, naphtha, ophthalmic; and both the p and the h are silent in apophthegm, phthisis, phthisical.

But such Liberals will wrap themselves in their own virtue, remembering the cheering apophthegm that "those who are dissatisfied are the sole benefactors of the world.

The Collection of Apophthegms (also a recreation in sickness), though considerably larger and altogether weightier, was considered so trifling a work that Dr. Rawley, in his "perfect list of his Lordship's true works, &c.," appended to the first edition of the Resuscitatio (1657), either forgot or did not think fit to mention it.

In short, there has been a rivalry in developing and amplifying the memory of the national songster, treating him as Socrates was once treated,bringing up all his apophthegms, reproducing the dialogues in which he figured,going even farther,carrying him to the very borders of legend, and evidently preparing to canonize in him one of the Saints in the calendar of the future.
