SAD PLIGHT OF FRENCH FUGITIVES M. Brieux, the noted French dramatist, who witnessed the arrival at Chartres of a train full of fugitives who had fled from their homes before the German advance, described his experience for the Figaro.

" One of the fugitives explained to M. Brieux why after the first hour of their flight she had to carry her elder child as well as her baby.

"I felt the inside with my fingers," says Brieux.

It too often leads such writers as M. Brieux and M. Hervieu to sacrifice the undulant and diverse rhythms of life to a stiff and symmetrical formalism.

The conception of a play as the exhaustive demonstration of a thesis has never taken a strong hold on the Anglo-Saxon mind; and, though some of M. Brieux's plays are much more than mere dramatic arguments, we need not, in the main, envy the French their logician-dramatists.

M. Brieux experienced some difficulty in bringing his early play, Blanchette, to a satisfactory close.

Brieux and Hervieu are, like Mr. Shaw, too much concerned with ideas to probe very deep into character.

It need not be such harrowing work as Brieux makes it, but if the man who had things to say could and would conquer the technique of dramatic writing, he would reach the biggest audiences that could be provided, which ought to pay him for the severity of his apprenticeship.
