Rides or drives on the coteaux (hills) in the vicinity are very pleasant, as the views from certain points are particularly fine.

Another pleasant ride is by way of the coteaux to Gan, and back by the road, or vice versá; but we always preferred the former, as the horses had the hill work while fresh, and then the level home.

Beyond Gan we passed into full view of the lovely Coteaux, which afford such pleasant rides and drives from Pau, and as we gradually neared the town, the heat seemed to intensify to anything but a pleasurable degree.

The banks of the Meuse hereabouts present either an abrupt precipice or coteaux covered with vines gently sloping to the water's edge.

Remains of Gothic castles are to be seen on their summits at a short distance from each other, and where the banks are not abrupt and escarpés there are coteaux covered with vines down to the water's edge.

The voyage on the Saône presents some pleasing and picturesque points of view; the coteaux on the banks of the river are covered with vines.

We then visited the lake called the Mare Morto or Styx; and then went round to the other side of it, to visit those beautiful coteaux planted in vines and their summits crowned with groves which have obtained the name of the Elysian fields.

This Styx and these Elysian fields look like any other lake and coteaux and are entirely indebted to the lyre of Maro for their celebrity.

These promenades are paved with gravel and cut thro' the forests, that lie on the coteaux and ravines on the other side of the Aar.

And what more noble than the vernal furze With golden caskets hung? I have seen whole cotees or coteaux (sides of hills) in the sweet little island of Jersey thickly mantled with the golden radiance of this beautiful wildflower.
