Holland was at one time second to no country in the extent of its colonies; and it still owns Java, the Moluccas, part of Borneo, New Guinea, Sumatra and Celebes, in the East; and in the West, Dutch Guiana and Curacoa.

Poor Joe tried to sell us a nest of Curacoa baskets for seven shillings; retired after a firm refusal; came up again to R-, after a couple of hours, and said, in a melancholy and reproachful voice, 'Da- take dem for four shillings and sixpence.

It is called Curacoa, and is arid and sterile.
