Although the caves at Elephanta are wonderful, they are greatly inferior in size and beauty to a larger group at Ellora, a day's journey by train from Bombay, and after that a carriage or horseback ride of two hours.

Among the numerous divisions of the excavations of Ellora, there is an upper story of the Dasavatara, or the temple of Vishnu's incarnations, the roof of which is supported by sixty-four square based pillars, eight in each row.

Then Rawunna, the giant, assuming the shape of a pilgrim yogee rolling to the Caves of Ellora,with Gayntree, the mystical text, on his lips, and the shadow of Siva's beard in his soul,rolls to Rama's door, and cries, "Alms, alms, in the name of the Destroyer!"

ELLORA, an Indian village in Hyderabad, 12 m. NW. of Aurungabad, famed for its Buddhist and Hindu cave and monolithic temples, the most magnificent of which is hewn out of a solid hill of red stone, the most beautiful being the Hindu temple of Kailás.
