A hum of perfect content arose from the feature below, and five minutes later Miss Ward was speeding in search of Mr. Farrer.

His own ideas of frightening Mr. Farrer were forgotten, and in a dry, choking voice he called loudly upon the name of that gentleman.

"Prove it," said Mr. Farrer, pushing his advantage.

"Nothing harmful," said Mr. Farrer, calmly.

"It sounds rather silly, as a matter of fact," said Mr. Farrer, slowly.
