But when a ray of the setting sun alighted upon one of these firs it shone like a flamingo.

Flocks of aquatic birds were to be seen on every side, the most numerous being the pelican, and a bird of the cotinga species, about the size of an English throstle, the plumage of which, being jet black and flamingo red, had a beautiful effect in the sunshine, as they flew or settled in thousands on the canes.

CHAPTER III To Parinacochas After a few days in the delightful climate of Chuquibamba we set out for Parinacochas, the "Flamingo Lake" of the Incas.

CHAPTER IV Flamingo Lake The Parinacochas Basin is at an elevation of between 11,500 and 12,000 feet above sea level.

It is not surprising that the natives should have named this body of water "Parinacochas" (Parina = "flamingo," cochas = "lake").

When flying, the flamingo seems to keep his head moving steadily forward at an even pace, although the ropelike neck undulates with the slow beating of the wings.

Although there were thousands and thousands of birds, we could find no flamingo nests, either old or new, search as we would.

Contrast the flamingo, which, having only two, and those like willow wands, tucks up one of them and sleeps poised high on the other, like a tulip on its stem.

The beautiful flamingo is a bird of feeble intellect, delicate appetite, and genteel tastes.

The sucking in and squirting out of the water is managed by the cheeks, or rather by the cheek, for a flamingo has only one cheek, and that is situated under the chin.

Near these are the Praya Flamingo and Botafogo, large villages with beautiful villas, pretty buildings, and gardens, which stretch far away until lost in the neighbourhood of the Sugarloaf, and thus close this most wonderful panorama.

Among the most agreeable walks in the immediate vicinity of the town, I may mention the Telegraph mountain, the public garden (Jardin publico), the Praya do Flamingo, and the Cloisters of St. Gloria and St. Theresia, etc.
