How far the nature of the soils, and the rocks will affect the scenery of a district may be well learnt from a very clever and interesting little book of Professor Geikie's, on "The Scenery of Scotland as affected by its Geological Structure."

Ur was one of the most ancient of the Chaldean cities and one of the most splendid, where arts and sciences were cultivated, where astronomers watched the heavens, poets composed hymns, and scribes stamped on clay tablets books which, according to Geikie, have in part come down to our own times.

"From first to last," says Geikie, "the intellect of the Hebrew dwelt supremely on the matters of his faith.

Says Stanley: "The purple vine, the green fig-tree, the gray olive, the scarlet pomegranate, the golden corn, the waving palm, the fragrant citron, vanished before them, and the trunks and branches were left bare and white by their devouring teeth,"a brilliant sentence, by the way, which Geikie quotes without acknowledgment, as well as many others, which lays him open to the charge of plagiarism.

Both Stanley and Geikie, however, seem to be indebted to Ewald for all that is striking and original in their histories,so true is Solomon's saying that there is nothing new under the sun.

You'd climb over Hardesty or Geikie to shoot a goat from above, even though you could get him from the valley without any work at all.

Through the window to the south and west he could see the white face of Mount Geikie, and forty miles away in that wilderness of peaks, the sombre frown of Hardesty; through it the sun came now, flooding his work as he had left it.
