But he was undaunted, although alone, and thus boldly addressed Hananiah, one of their leaders and himself a priest: "Hear the words that I speak in your ears.

On this, Hananiah snatched the ox-yoke from the neck of Jeremiah, and broke it, saying, "Thus saith Jehovah, Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar from the neck of all nations within two years."

And further, hear this, O Hananiah!

And next to him Hananiah, one of those who prepare sweet ointments, repaired.

After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah and Hanum the sixth son of Zalaph repaired another section.

[Sidenote: Neh. 7:1-3] Now when the wall had been built and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites had been appointed, I placed my brother Hanani and Hananiah the commander of the castle in charge of Jerusalem; for he was a faithful man, and more God-fearing than many.

His kinsman Hanani, who had headed the original deputation to Susa, and a certain Hananiah were by him placed in charge of the city.

Hananiah, Azariah, Mishael believed, And were rescued from the flame.

His other choice was Hananiah, the ruler of the palace or the fort, which was a tower, standing in the temple courts on the spot on which, in Roman days, stood the Tower of Antonia.

Nehemiah tells us exactly why he made choice of the man Hananiah.

'So did not I,' he had said of himself, 'because of the fear of God; that fear held me back from sin,' and he felt sure it would be the same with Hananiah.

These two rulers, Hanani and Hananiah, planned out the defence of the city.

Do you not remember how it fared with Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, when they refused the meat and the wine, and ate pulse instead?
