THE STORY OF HEDLEY VICARS.

Close to the Russian entrenchments was an advanced post of the British forces, commanded by Captain Hedley Vicars.

The first to discover the presence of the enemy was Hedley Vicars.

Hedley Vicars was a true soldier and earnest Christian.

Let it make the most of its Hedley Vicars and its Havelock, and sound its own trumpet as loudly as it can, in sounding theirs; for they are the last specimens of heroism which it is likely to begetif indeed it did in any true sense beget them, and if their gallantry was really owing to their creed, and not to the simple fact of their beinglike othersEnglish gentlemen.

The leader was Ernest Favenc, who was accompanied by surveyor Briggs, G. Hedley, and a black boy.

The modern alterations and restorations have been more happy in their effect, and one of the notable additions to the church is the beautiful carved oak screen in the chancel, the work of Mr. Ralph Hedley.

It is built entirely of Roman stones, and was erected by an enthusiastic antiquary, Mr. Anthony Hedley, for himself.
