God tempers the Wind, &c.The French proverb, "A brebis tondue Dieu mesure le vent" (God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb), will be found in Quitard's Dictionnaire étymologique, historique et anecdotique, des Proverbes, et des Locutions proverbiales de la Langue française, 8vo.

In one of these, which is reproduced in Racinet's "Le Costume Historique," there is a Chinese princess reclining on a sofa which has a frame of black wood visible, and slightly ornamented; it is upholstered with rich embroidery, for which these artistic people seem to have been famous from a very early period.

The registers of the French Academy (see Larroumet, Marivaux, p. 629) and d'Alembert (Éloge, p. 261) assign as the date of his death February 12; but l'Abbé de La Porte, p. 10), Lesbros de la Versane (p. 40), and Collé (Journal historique, tome II, p. 288) give the date as February 11.
