Ignotus notusve mihi de gente togata Sive aget in ludis, pulpita sive colet, Sive in Lycaeo, et nugas evolverit istas, Si quasdam mendas viderit inspiciens, Da veniam Authori, dices; nam plurima vellet Expungi, quae jam displicuisse sciat.

[5806] "Ut flos in septis secretus nascitur hortis, Ignotus pecori, nullo contusus aratro, Quam mulcent aurae, firmat sol, educat imber, &c. Sic virgo dum intacta manet, dum chara suis, sed Cum Castum amisit," &c. Virginity is a fine picture, as [5807]Bonaventure calls it, a blessed thing in itself, and if you will believe a Papist, meritorious.

And there may here and there also have been a poet or novelist like that "Pictor Ignotus" of Browning's, who cried: "I could have painted pictures like that youth's Ye praise so!" He would have had a painter's fame: "But a voice changed it.

They ran something in this wise: "IGNOTUS IGNOTAE!You have bestowed without intending it, and I have taken without your knowledge.

Quite forgetting that I was (or had meant to be) Ignotus, I found myself staring rather significantly at one or the other of the young ladies, in whom I discovered some slight general resemblance to the imaginary character.

A carefully-written "Personal," in which Ignotus informed Ignota of the necessity of his communicating with her, appeared simultaneously in the Tribune, Herald, World, and Times.

I hardly have observed any one fill his several Duties of Life better than Ignotus.

Illi mors gravis incubat, Qui, notus nimis omnibus, Ignotus moritur sibi.' Seneca.

With reference to the first four lines of this stanza, compare Catullus, Carmen Nuptiale, verse 39. 'Ut flos in septis secretus nascitur hortis, Ignotus pecori, nullo contusus aratro, Quem mulcent auræ, firmat sol, educat imber: Multi illuum pueri, multæ optavere puellæ: Idem quum tenui carptus defloruit ungui, Nulli illum pueri, nallæ optavere puellæ: Sic virgo, dum intacta manet,' etc. 38.
