"Der reizt und wirkt"the words necessarily recall a much older parable than the catfishthe parable of the little leaven inserted in a piece of dough until it leavens the whole lump by its "working," as cooks and bakers know.

The kingdom of heaven was like a little leaven that leavens the whole lump, and Goethe says that Mephisto, one of the Princes of Evil, also works like that.

Thus history is perpetually rewritten; fresh knowledge opens new vistas in the past as well as the future; the discovery of to-day may rectify, in important respects, the statement which has been unchallenged for centuries; one new truth leavens a thousand old formulas; and nothing is more gradual than the elucidation of historical events and characters.

From these first preferences there proceeded on one side vanity and contempt, on the other envy and shame; and the fermentation raised by these new leavens at length produced combinations fatal to happiness and innocence.

He has in his heart a tiny sacred particle which leavens his whole being and keeps it pure and sounda faculty of admiration and respect.

It is indeed so much more common, as to seem the only proper mode of expression: as, "Do I say these things as a man?""Do you think that we excuse ourselves?""Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?""Dost thou revile?" &c.
