He concludes thus: 'I am pretty well satisfied that the flower celebrated by the poets is what we now are acquainted with under the name 'Lilium floribus reflexis,' or Martagon, and perhaps may be that very species which we call Imperial Martagon.

3. Orange Lily, (Lilium bulbiferum).

"In the summer, the yellow of the large Composite will predominate, intermingled with the blue of the Tradescantias, the fiery red of the Lilies, (Lilium Philadelphicum and Lilium Canadense,) the purple of the Phlox, the white of the Cacalia tuberosa, Melanthium Virginicum, and the umbelliferous plants.

Examples occur in the axillary buds of Lilium bulbiferum, in some Alliums, etc.

Lilium seed may be sown in well-drained pots or shallow boxes filled with equal parts of peat, leaf-mould, loam, and sand.

Thorns are sometimes interlaced with the lily, to express the "Lilium inter Spinas."

Professor Martyn says that the flower called Lilium Martagon or the Scarlet Turk's Cap is the plant alluded to by the ancients.

The LILY, Lilium, Soosun, the latter derived from the Hebrew, is a handsome species that deserves more care than it has yet received in India, where some of the varieties are indigenous.
