Among some of the many other equally wonderful plants may be mentioned the "stony wood," which is thus described by Gerarde:"Being at Rugby, about such time as our fantastic people did with great concourse and multitudes repair and run headlong unto the sacred wells of Newnam Regis, in the edge of Warwickshire, as unto the Waters of Life, which could cure all diseases."

III.Love-making at Lyme Regis

At this interesting juncture the scene of action was changed from Uppercross to Lyme Regis, owing to Captain Wentworth's receipt of a letter from his old friend Captain Harville, announcing his being settled at this latter place.

Captain Wentworth, after a visit to Lyme Regis, gave so interesting an account of the adjacent country that the young people were all wild to see it.

His monument was composed of white marble, and carved from the picture just now mentioned of him, by order of his executor Dr. King, bishop of Chichester, who wrote the following inscription, Johannes Donne, S.T.P. Post varia studia, quibus ab annis tenerimus fideliter, Neo infeliciter, incubit, Instinctu et impulsu spiritus sancti, monitu et horatu, Regis Jacobi, ordines sacros amplexus,

E.V. Stephen Eiton, or Eden's "Acta Regis Edw.

p. 181.), reminds me of the work of Stephen Eiton or Eden, a canon-regular of Warter, in Yorkshire, entitled, "Acta Regis Edwardi iidi," which is said still to remain in manuscript.

It seems that the bodies of some of Thomas's accomplices were also supposed to have worked miracles; for we find an ordinance "Contra Fingentes miracula fieri per inimicos Regis.
