Pope has mentioned Petronius, among the great names of criticism, as the remarker justly observes, without any critical merit.

It has been, by some remarker, observed, that no man ever grew immortal by a translation; and, undoubtedly, translations into the prose of a living language must be laid aside, whenever the language changes, because the matter being always to be found in the original, contributes nothing to the preservation of the form superinduced by the translator.

This was for a long time among the deficiencies of English literature; but, as the caprice of man is always starting from too little to too much, we have now, amongst other disturbers of human quiet, a numerous body of reviewers and remarkers.

The reviewers and critical reviewers, the remarkers and examiners, can satisfy their hunger only by devouring their brethren.
