This was urged in several letters written to him at St. Mary's, by Mr. Reynolds, with the approbation of Mr. Southard, then Secretary of the Navy.

The work to which we allude is the opera "Omano,"the libretto in Italian by Signor Manetta, the music by Mr. L. H. Southard.

Mr. Southard's opera is founded upon Beckford's Oriental tale, "Vathek," with such alterations as are necessary to adapt it for representation.

It is certain that Mr. Southard's music pleased, and that some of the most critical of the audience were roused to a real enthusiasm.
