The river could still be followed a short distance further upwards; and in its bed there were disjointed fragments of talcose and chloritic rocks.

On some of them the coal-beds form part of the cliffs along the shore; on others, copper is found in a chlorite and talcose slate.

The few specimens we obtained of its rocks consisted of the different varieties of talcose formation, with quartz and jasper.

Many fragments of red, gray, and purple basalt and porphyry were met with along the beach; talcose rock and slate, syenite, hornblend, quartz, both compact and slaty, with chalcedony, were found in pieces and large pebbles.

I could perceive no trace of a metallic vein, so thoroughly had it been worked out, but scattered over the hillside with schist, talcose slate, and fragments of quartz, was a great deal of scoriae, showing that metal of some kind had been excavated, and that the smelting had been done on the spot.

That of the Green Eyed Monsternow thoroughly oxidized as far as penetratedforms a sheet from twenty to forty feet in thickness, consisting of ferruginous, sandy, or talcose soft material carrying from twenty to thirty dollars to the ton in gold and silver.

They were found to be alternate groups of common and talcose slate and of a rock made up principally of angular fragments of white quartz (grauwacke).
