For a long time the Gauls were most formidable to the Romans, as well as to all other nations with whom they came in contact, even as far east as the Ukraine; as to Rome, we see this as late as the Cisalpine war of the year A.U. 527.

THE PARTRIDGE.This bird is to be found in nearly all the temperate countries of Europe, but is most abundant in the Ukraine, although it is unable to bear the extremes of climate, whether hot or cold.

The policy of Russification had not been abandoned; indeed in Finland and the Ukraine it survived in its most odious form.

But it was not merely the absence of colour and beauty in dress, or the want of national character and distinctiona plainness that would afflict even a Russian peasant from the Ukraine or a Tartar from the further Caspian.

Finland demanded its independence, and German spies and agents encouraged the Ruthenians living in a great province called the Ukraine, to do the same.

In the meantime, the Ruthenian republic, now called the Ukraine, was allowed by the Bolsheviki to make a separate peace with Germany and Austria.

The troops of the Germans and Austrians began joyously to pillage both Russia and the Ukraine, hunting for the food that was so scarce in the central empires.

Unwise, unjust, unmerciful ukraine!
