The Seville Archbishops during the reign of Philip II were D. Fernando Valdes, Inquisitor General (d. 1568), D. Gaspar de Zúñiga y Avellaneda (d. 1571), D. Cristohal de Roxas y Sandoval (d. 1580), and D. Rodrigo de Castro (d. 1600).

The next governor-general who seems to have left any permanent mark of usefulness is Valdes, whom I suppose I may be allowed to call their modern Lycurgus.

If Tacon was feared and respected, Valdes was beloved; and each appears to have fairly earned the reputation he obtained.

Valdes was succeeded by O'Donnell, whose rule was inaugurated in negro blood.
