PRINCE When the German divisions of the Crown Prince of Prussia began their last desperate offensive on July 15, they attacked from Chateau Thierry on the west to Massiges, along a 65-mile front, crossing the Marne at several places.

It was no doubt moving towards the Marne on that flank march which was Von Kluck's undoing.

On Thursday morning, July 18, 1918, a heavy attack was launched in force at the Germans under General von Boehm all along the line from Chateau Thierry on the Marne to the Aisne river northwest of Soissons.

"The British corps, overcoming some resistance on the River Petit Morin, crossed the Marne in pursuit of the Germans, who now were hastily retreating northwest.

"Picture this battlefield, which will assuredly take its place with that of the Marne as one of the greatest combats of the greatest war.

The 3d Division was holding the bank of the Marne from the bend east of the mouth of the Surmélin to the west of Mézy, opposite Château-Thierry, where a large force of German infantry sought to force a passage under support of powerful artillery concentrations and under cover of smoke screens.

"Crossing the Marne by a sand-stone bridge, we climbed the opposing heights under a burning sun.

There was considerable fighting with the French Fifth Army on the French left, which fell back from its position south of the Marne toward the Seine.

"The English divisions are destroying the bridges on the Marne behind them as they cross.

The director began to dispute with Monsieur de Marne about the payment of the rent, and maintained that he bad no right to send more than one patient to the hospital.
