The "Legend of S. Catherine," painted by Masaccio in 8. Clemente at Rome, though an earlier work, is scarcely less remarkable as evidence that a new age had begun for art.

Donatello was painted by his friend Masaccio at the Carmine, but the fresco has perished.

It is clear that we must look not to Fra Angelico but to Masaccio for the progressive forces that were carrying art forward to complete accomplishment.

In comparing Masaccio with Giotto we must admit that, with so much gained, something has been sacrificed.
