When Parr was a candidate for the mastership of Colchester Grammar School, Johnson wrote for him a letter of recommendation.

He resigned his Upper Grammar Mastership in 1799, and probably retired to the rectory of Gainscolne to which he had been appointed by the school committee six years earlier.

Twenty-five years before he had rowed as number seven in the Oxford Eight, with an eye all the while upon a mastership at his old school.
