Many remarkable phenomena attend this state of the atmosphere, known as the Fata Morgana of Sicily, the Mirage of the Desert, the Spectre of the Brocken, and the more common exhibitions of halos, coronæ, and mock suns.

As a background to this picture lies the Vetternthe bottomless lake as the commonalty believewith its transparent water, its sea-like waves, and in calm, with "Hegring," or fata morgana on its steel-like surface.
