The gardens are stiff, very Italian, with statues, fountains, and marble balustradesnot many flowers, except immediately around the palace, but they were flooded with sunshine that day, and the old grey pile seemed to rise out of a parterre of bright flowers.

It was the favorite flower of the Empress Josephine, who caused her own name to be traced in the parterres at Malmaison with a plantation of the rarest roses.

On again ascending, you catch a fine view of Box Hill, and the amphitheatrical range of opposite hills, with one of the most magnificent parterres in nature.

The violets and snowdrops and crocuses are rooted up, all the sweet and tender old flowers ruthlessly eradicated, to make way for a blazing parterre after the manner of the suburban villagay in the summer, in the spring a wilderness of clay, in the autumn a howling desert of musty evergreens..

As before mentioned, Rose trees look well in a parterre by themselves, but a few may be dispersed along the borders of the garden.

There are no richer parterres to my eyes than the dense beds of dwarf andromeda (Cassandra calyculata) which cover these tender places on the earth's surface.
