McClellan's capture of Yorktown in May, 1862, was soon followed by the hasty evacuation of Norfolk by the Confederate forces, so that at the end of the first year of the war most of the seacoast from Norfolk to the Gulf was in Union hands.

CHAPTER V PEACE WITHOUT HONOUR The war was brought to a virtual termination by the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 19, 1781.

But the engineer officers reported that they could not protect the fleet there against the French; and, to the delight of Lafayette and of all good angels, Cornwallis selected Yorktown for his summer position.
