He had the characteristics of a great general, being systematic in his work and a lover of discipline, and established Methodism in London by his sermons at the Foundery.

When a little later on he was offered a much better situation on the condition that he gave up Methodism he refused it, preferring, as he says, "his God to white and yellow ore".

At length he decided to sever all connection with those who insisted upon acting in accordance with them, and removed Methodism to the Foundry.
