Bernard Barton's sonnet "To Elia" stood as introduction.

George Fox's Journal was lent to Lamb by a friend of Bernard Barton's in 1823.

Barton's poem was entitled "A Poet's Thanks," and was printed in the London Magazine for April, 1823, the same number that contained Lamb's article on Ritson and Scott.

It was Blake's poem which had excited Barton's curiosity.

[Barton's letter, to which this is an answer, not being preserved, we do not know what his scruples were.

Barton's new volume was A Widow's Tale and Other Poems, 1827.

Barton's bankers were the Alexanders, a Quaker firm.

[The edition of Bunyan was that published for Barton's friend, John Major, and John Murray in 1830, with a life of Bunyan by Southey, and illustrations by John Martin and W. Harvey, and a prefatory poem not by Mrs. Hemans but by Bernard Barton immediately before Bunyan's "Author's Apology for his Book," from which Lamb quotes.

She cried a little at the recollection of John Barton's harsh words when she had timidly tried to approach him.

They are taken from Mr. Barton's letter, above referred to.

He had not been long under Mr. Barton's care, and after all, what could a schoolmaster do in twelve months, to remedy the evils which had been growing up for twelve years?

"At length, on the 20th June, 1777, a man by the name of Coffin, who made his escape from the British, was seized by some of the American troops, and carried to Major Barton's quarters.

These lines were sent by Lamb to Lucy Barton's father, Bernard Barton, the Quaker poet, in the letter of September 30, 1824.

Harber followed to Barton's stateroom, which the sick man was occupying alone.

He put his hand upon Barton's arm and gently pressed it.

When her burst of grief had subsided, and she was calm, her mother asked several questions, and learned all that was said, and was much excited at Julia's account of the encounter with the beast and Barton's intrepidity.

For herself, for his brothers, and more for Julia, whom she now understood, and tenderly loved, and whose secret was sacred to her woman's heart; and most of all for Barton's own sake; for she knew that when these two met, the shadow that had surrounded them would disappear.
