The femur is quite like that of a horse, and has the characteristic fossa above the external condyle.

The femur is more like that of the Paloeotheria than that of the horse, and has only a small depression above its outer condyle in the place of the great fossa which is so obvious in the Equidoe.

The Coryphodon appears to have been allied to the Miocene and later Tapirs, while Pliolophus, in its skull and dentition, curiously partakes of both artiodactyle and perissodactyle characters; the third trochanter upon its femur, and its three-toed hind foot, however, appear definitely to fix its position in the latter division.

The bones of the lower limbs may be thus arranged: Thigh: Femur, or thigh bone, Lower Leg: Patella, or knee cap, Tibia, or shin bone, Fibula, or splint bone, Foot: 7 Tarsal or ankle bones, 5 Metatarsal or instep bones, 14 Phalanges, or toes bones, making 30 bones in all.

The longest and strongest of all the bones is the femur, or thigh bone.

The shaft of the femur is strong, and is ridged and roughened in places for the attachment of the muscles.

A trifling fall, for instance, may cause a broken hip (popularly so called, though really a fracture of the neck of the femur), from the shock of which, and the subsequent pain and exhaustion, an aged person may die in a few weeks.

/ I. Thigh Femur.

The cup-shaped cavity of the innominate bone for receiving the head of the femur.

Name given to two projections on the upper extremities of the femur, which give attachment to the rotator muscles of the thigh.

A large and long bone was selected, as the femur of a man or deer, and it was channeled by deep longitudinal incisions.

Round her waist she wears a cord to which are tied the heads of femurs of a porcupine; because of all animals known to the Tinneh the porcupine suffers least in parturition, it simply drops its young and continues to walk or skip about as if nothing had happened.
