Dear SirWe shall have great pleasure in surprising Mrs. Aders on her BirthdayYou will perceive how cunningly I have contrived the direction of this note, to evade postage.

It is the only note to Aders, a friend of Crabb Robinson, to whose house Lamb often went for talk and whist.

Aders had a fine collection of German pictures.

D'r Sir, My friend Aders, a German merchant, German born, has opend to the public at the Suffolk St. Gallery his glorious Collection of old Dutch and German Pictures.

Lamb's verses ran thus: TO C. ADERS, ESQ.

On his Collection of Paintings by the old German Masters Friendliest of men, Aders, I never come Within the precincts of this sacred Room, But I am struck with a religious fear, Which says "Let no profane eye enter here.

Canst thou copy and send, or bring with thee, a vanity in verse which in my younger days I wrote on friend Aders' pictures?

What can be done by a really sustained research into a particular questionespecially if it is a question essentially mechanicalis shown by the work of a Frenchman all too neglected by the trumpet of fameClement Ader.

M. Ader was probably the first man to get a mechanism up into the air for something more than a leap.

The fact of interest here is that in 1908, when flying was still almost incredible, M. Ader published his "Aviation Militaire."

Well, that was eight years ago, and men have been fighting in the air now for a year, and there is still nothing being done that M. Ader did not see, and which we, if we had had the wisdom to attend to him, might not have been prepared for.
