Every part is flower, (or fruit,) such is its superfluity of color,stem, branch, peduncle, pedicel, petiole, and even the at length yellowish purple-veined leaves.

Single flowers have often a two-inch spread of petal, and the full, twelve blossomed heads above the slender pedicels have the airy effect of wings.

Note how many there are deep-throated and bell-flowered like the pentstemons, how many have nodding pedicels as the columbine, how many grow in copse shelters and grow there only.

The flower-buds contain a cluster of flowers, on slender green pedicels.

Flowers small, in 3-inch long racemes, deep yellow with bright red pedicels.

This is the commonest native species, with purplish-pink flowers on small pedicels.

The flowers are small and inconspicuous, but the feathery nature of the flower clusters, occasioned by the transformation of the pedicels and hairs into fluffy awns, renders this Sumach one of the most curious and attractive of hardy shrubs.
