The greatest prose work which had yet appeared in Greece was produced by Herodotus,--a prose epic, severe in taste, perfect in unity, rich in moral wisdom, charming in style, religious in spirit, grand in subject, without a coarse passage; simple, unaffected, and beautiful, like the narratives of the Bible, amusing yet instructive, easy to understand, yet extending to the utmost boundaries of human research,--a model for all subsequent historians.
The length of time that has elapsed since the writings of Johnson were first published, has amply developed their intrinsic merits, and destroyed the personal and party prejudices which assail a living author: but the years have been too few to render the customs and manners alluded to so obsolete as to require much illustrative research.a It may be satisfactory to subjoin, that care has been exercised in every thing that we have advanced, and that when we have erred, it has been on the side of caution.
p. 276: Based upon my own research.--A different view of the development of Chinese industry is found in Norman Jacobs, Modern Capitalism and Eastern Asia, Hong Kong 1958.
Well researched and crisply written stories like the ones on the protests against charter tourism in the early 1990s were a joy to read long after the magazine became a pale shadow of itself.
Illustration The subject of the above engraving claims the attention of the antiquarian researcher, not as the lofty sculptured mansion of our monastic progenitors, or the towering castle of the feudatory baton, for never has the voice of boisterous revelry, or the tones of the solemn organ, echoed along its vaulted roof; a humbler but not less interesting trait marks its history.
Since the labours of the psychic researchers began, we have heard of a great many strange things; but it is evident that he is a young man of education and culture, and in all probability a journalist or literary man.
The thoughtful mind is awed by the contemplation of this scene, and when the reflection comes that these vast spaces are but grains of sand upon an infinite shore of creation, and that there are worlds of beauty as far and varied between the tiny flowers and the ultimate researches of the microscope as those which exist, on an ascending scale, between the flowers and the great globe itself, the mind is overwhelmed with wonder and admiration.
Experimental researches.--All experiments referred to in this paper were made by jets of water under an actual vertical head of 45 ft.,
Wholly absorbed in spiritual researches,--having, in fact, no vital interest in anything else,--I soon developed into what is called a Medium.

ALGIC RESEARCHES.--The oral legends of the Indians collected by me being adhered to, he said, "Take care that, in publishing your Indian legends, you do not subject yourself to the imputations made against Macpherson."
p. 196: For the change in the composition of the gentry, I am using my own research.--For clan rules, clan foundations, etc.,
I think it is safe to say that the Internet has irrevocably changed the face of researching, collecting and distributing news.
p. 204: For these dynasties, I rely upon my own research.--Niida Noboru and Kat=o Shigeru have studied adoption laws; our specific case has in addition been studied by M. Kurihara.
The first requirement of an historian in the present century is original research,--not merely research into rare printed books and pamphlets, but into unpublished and almost unknown manuscripts.
p. 198: For the merchants I used Ch'ue T'ung-tsu, Sung Hsi and Wada Kiyoshi.--For trade, I used extensively Ch'uean Han-sheng and J. Kuwabara.--On labour legislation in early modern times I used Ko Ch'ang-chi and especially Li Chien-nung, also my own studies.--On strikes I used Kat=o Shigeru and modern Chinese authors.--The problem of "vagrants" has been taken up by Li Chien-nung who always refers to the original sources and to modern Chinese research.--The growth of cities, perhaps the most striking event in this period, has been studied for the earlier part of our period by Kat=o Shigeru.
This declaration excited, we confess, painful misgivings in our mind; for, if Mr. Wilson was already in possession of the truth, independently of historical research,--whether by communications from the spirits of the Conquistadores, or by any other of the easy and popular methods of solving obscure problems,--what need was there of his consulting the standard authorities at all?
