If any one shall sayBy that definition you make not only geology and chemistry branches of natural history, but meteorology and astronomy likewiseI cannot deny it.

Geology is, literally, the natural history of soils and lands; chemistry the natural history of compounds, organic and inorganic; meteorology the natural history of climates; astronomy the natural history of planetary and solar bodies.

As there is a close connection, in meteorology, between the winds and the rains, so in Aztec mythology, there was an equally near one between Quetzalcoatl, as the god of the winds, and the gods of rain, Tlaloc and his sister, or wife, or mother, Chalchihuitlicue.

* METEOROLOGY.

The purpose of this article is to present, in a brief and simple manner, the leading principles on which the science of Meteorology is founded,rather, however, in the spirit of an inquirer than of a teacher.

Meteorology has advanced very far beyond its original limits.

Without dwelling upon the numerous consequences which flow from meteorological influences, let us see what is properly included under the subject of Meteorology.

* Polarity of light is another of the wonders of which Meteorology takes cognizance.

The distribution of rain, which is one of the offices of the clouds, is another of the more important features of Meteorology.

The electric character of the air is another subject of interest, and a leading one in Meteorology.

The improvement of navigation, he said, meant an international code of police to improve police rules of navigation; an international code of universal telegraphy for navigation; an international office of meteorology and navigation to collect the studies; experiments on the weather, on the sea, on the casualties; and the discovery by experiment of new apparatus and appliances to diminish maritime disaster.
