According to an old adage, the laurestinus, dedicated to St. Faine (January 1), an Irish abbess in the sixth century, may be seen in bloom: "Whether the weather be snow or rain, We are sure to see the flower of St. Faine; Rain comes but seldom and often snow, And yet the viburnum is sure to blow.

And here float little emissaries from the dominions of land; for the fallen florets of the Viburnum drift among the lily-pads, with mast-like stamens erect, sprinkling the water with a strange beauty, and cheating us with the promise of a new aquatic flower.

We also stewed our tree-cranberries, (Viburnum opulus,) sweetening them with sugar.

The gray bark of the branches has also a distinct effect in winter when grown in contrast to the red-barked species of Cornus, Viburnum, and yellow-barked Osier.

In the foreground were blue Raspberry-stems, yet bearing greenish leaves,pale-yellow Witch-Hazel, almost leafless,purple Viburnum-berries,the silky cocoons of the Milkweed,and, amid the underbrush, a few lingering Asters and Golden-Rods, Ferns still green, and Maidenhair bleached white.

A great many of them must perish of hunger, or be reduced to the necessity of feeding on the berries of the Viburnum and Juniper, should they be overtaken by an extensive and enduring snow that cuts off their journey of emigration.

Viburnum Opulus(Guelder Rose, or Snowball Tree).A very elegant and hardy deciduous shrub, which will grow in any soil, and may be increased by layers, or by cuttings planted in the shade under glass.

Viburnum Tinus (Laurestinus).This well-known and much-admired evergreen shrub produces masses of white flowers through the winter months, at which season it is especially ornamental.

Every old white farm-house, with its gray-walled garden, its clumps of lilacs, viburnums, and early roses, offered us a picture of pastoral simplicity and repose.
