The reader will be aware that this is the tale of which Goethe availed himself in representing Faustus's visit to Auerbach's cellar at Leipzig.

Whether it really occurred there is not stated; but that Faustus was said to have been at Leipzig, and even in Auerbach's cellar, is an historical fact, attested by two pictures still extant at this famous old tavern, where many of our curious American travellers may have seen them.

Beneath it is the following inscription in German: "Dr. Faustus zu dieser Frist Aus Auerbach's Keller geritten ist, Auf einem Fass mit Wein geschwind, Welches gesehn manch Mutterkind.

On the Height Berthold Auerbach, a German poet and author of Jewish descent, was born at Nordstetten, in Würtemberg, on February 28, 1812.

Her whole aspect had a Madonna air, what Berthold Auerbach so beautifully calls Marienhaft.

B. Auerbach has worked Spinoza's life into a romantic novel, Spinoza, ein Denkerleben, 1837; 2d ed., 1855

Volumes IV and V contain the principal Romanticists, including Fichte and Schelling; Volume VI brings Heine, Grillparzer, and Beethoven to view; Volume VII, Hegel and Young Germany; Volume VIII, Auerbach, Gotthelf, and Fritz Reuter; Volume IX, Hebbel and Ludwig; Volume X, Bismarck, Moltke, Lassalle.

The national spirit of which Egmont is full also fills the novels of Willibald Alexis and Berthold Auerbach.

This is true of Hugo, Auerbach, Dickens and George Eliot, again and again.
