"That is my look out," snapped Mr. Cressy.

Harrison Cressy spoke with conviction.

Would you expect him to take French leave the first time somebody offered him more money?" Harrison Cressy snorted, beckoned to the waiter his face purple with rage.

And dropping on a stool Mr. Cressy fanned himself with his panama and grinned at Philip, a grin the young man could not quite fathom.

It rather took his breath away to have Harrison Cressy on his side like this.

Mr. Cressy gave me a glimpse into things that I knew nothing about.

CHAPTER XXII THE DUNBURY CURE Harrison Cressy awoke next morning to the cheerful chirrup of robins and the pleasant far-off sound of church bells.

Mr. Cressy rather liked that.

From the tonneau of the other car Harrison Cressy stepped out, somewhat ponderously, followed by some one else, some one all in white with hair that shone pure gold even in the gathering twilight.

"Brother Lambert," said Mr. Cressy.

Where is my son, I'd like to know?" demanded Mr. Cressy.

"Don't rub it in," snapped Harrison Cressy, though he gripped the proffered hand hard.

Blenheim, I grant you, is a splendid three year old, but my Cressy is just about twenty yards swifter in two miles.

Cressy, I repeat, is the best three year old in Virginia, which of course means the best in all the colonies, and I have a thousand weight of prime tobacco to prove it.

" "My plantation grows good tobacco too, James, and I also have a thousand weight of prime leaf which talks back to your thousand weight, and tells it that Cressy is the second best three year old in Virginia, not the best.

You know, don't you, Lennox, that my colt, Cressy, has all Virginia beaten in speed?"

"Truly, and you take the mount on Cressy?" "None other shall ride him.

It was the great topic in Williamsburg and the historic names, Blenheim and Cressy, were in the mouths of everybody.

Robert, filled with the spirit of it, laid a small wager on Blenheim, and then, in order to show no partiality, laid another in another quarter, but of exactly the same amount on Cressy.

" "What do they say?" "Stuart knows that Blenheim is the fastest horse in Virginia, and Cabell knows that Cressy is, and so there the matter stands until the race is run.

Blenheim has a much more modern sound than Cressy, and I'm all for modernity.
