The march was, however, begun: the army, being joined by that of count Saxe, consisted of fifty thousand men, who, notwithstanding all the difficulties which two Austrian armies could put in their way, at last entered Bohemia.

No success attended the French arms in any quarter of the world, with the exception of the victories of Marshal Saxe at Fontenoy (1745); and the French lost the reputation they had previously acquired under Henry IV., Condé, Turenne, and Luxembourg.

In 1775 our poet was invited by the young Duke of Saxe-Weimar, Karl August,whose acquaintance he had made at Frankfort and at Mentz, his junior by two or three years,to establish himself in civil service at the Grand-Ducal Court.

On the whole, it was a happy chance that called him to the little capital of the little Grand-Duchy of Saxe-Weimar.
