Probably the "delicate oath" of Chaucer's prioress, who was a French scholar "after the scole of Stratford-atte-Bowe," was St. Loy, i.e. St. Louis, and not St. Eloi the patron saint of smiths and artists.

The Anglo-Norman dialect had grown corrupt, and Chaucer contrasts the French of Paris with the provincial French spoken by his prioress, "after the scole of Stratford-atte-Bowe."

Ful wel she sange the servicë devine, Entunëd in hire nose ful swetëly; And Frenche she spake ful fayre and fetisly After the scole of Stratford-attë-Bowe, For Frenche of Paris was to hire unknowe.
