About a month after Victor Emmanuel's death the old Pope died, the 8th of February, 1878, quite suddenly at the end.

From September 8th to 12th four batteries poured in a constant storm of shot and shell; number one was directed against the Cashmere bastion, number two against the right flank of the Cashmere bastion, number three against the Water bastion, and number four against the Cashmere and Water gates and bastions.

The campaign, however, lasted only three weeks, and was determined by the decisive French victory of September 8th on the Grand Couronné.

Miss Lister wrote to Lord John on June 8th from Windsor Castle:
