From Nov. 27th I was ill; made the last journal entry of the year on Dec. 6th; the next was on Jan. 14th, 1837.

I thought of writing a long journal letter, but I have not the heart to think of anything but Helen.

Six years ago I began the planting of my garden, and at the same time my girlish habit of journal keeping veered into the making of a "Garden Boke," to be a reversible signal, crying danger in face of forgotten mistakes, then turning to give back glints of summer sunshine when read in the attic of winter days and blue Mondays.

He has an astonishing amount of journal manuscripts, and I think may in time prepare something from them....

Wherever he went, he threw out complaints against the government,charged it with imbecility,boasted that with two hundred men he could drive the President and Congress into the Potomac,freely prophesied a dissolution of the Union, and published in the local journals articles pointing out the advantages which would result from a separation of the Western from the Eastern States.

There were probably two or three hundred people, perhaps many more, in the company; among them, as the journal records, "James Robertson's lady and children," the latter to the number of five.
